I believe my nearest Bartlett was Lydia Bartlett, daughter of Jesse Bartlett and Nancy Ann Adams.
Lydia was born 16 May, 1837 in Illinois and died 28 March 1938 at Edwardsville, Madison Co, IL.
She married Caleb Gonterman and they had three children, Thomas E, Laura and Jessie.

I lived in Mount Greenwood, a part of Chicago, from the age of five until I was married.
Our home was a small, two story brick house.
The Grade School I attended, Mount Greenwood, was across the street and half a block away.


Herman Popkin


When Herman Popkin was born on July 25, 1913, in Chicago, Illinois, his father, Heinrich, was 21 and his mother, Mary, was 23. He had three daughters with Lois. He died on October 19, 1967, in Chicago, IL  at the age of 54.

Herman had a problem with his eyes so that in every photo taken of him he appears to have turned his head slightly.
He suffered from heart disease most of his adult life.

Zipporah Ann Coles

Zipporah was born June, 1827 at McDonough County, Illinois. Her parents were Lydia Hunt and Robert Coles. She married Thomas Newell on Nov. 16, 1847 at Wapello County, Iowa.

She was a member of Eastern Star and Daughters of Rebekah. 

Her children were Esther, Margaret, Jessie Jane and Benjamin Coles.  Her children were all born in Iowa.

In 1905 Zipporah died at Castroville, CA, while on a visit to her son's home.  She was buried in Chariton, Iowa.

William Thomas Cottay was born about 1842 in England.
He died 7  Oct, 1920 at Chicago, Cook Co, IL.
William was a carpenter and a grocer. He had a grocery store at the corner of 31st Street and Wallace, 3252 Wallace, Chicago.

William married Ellen Jones on 18 Aug, 1872 at Chicago IL.


William had seven children, Charles, George, Susan, Mary, William John, Joseph, and Ellen.

Margaret H Newell


Margaret H (Newell) Dawson



Margaret was born on Monday, 25 March 1850, in Eddyville Wapello Co IA.  She was the daughter of Thomas Newell, formerly of Eddyville Wapello Co IA and Zipporah Ann (Coles) of McDonough Co IL.

She married John P Dawson on March 8, 1873 at Chariton Iowa.

Margaret H was the mother of nine children, Jesse Newell of IA, Alberta Adams, Esther of IA, Frederick E of IA, Jay of IA, Mary Emma of Chariton, Lucas Co, IA, Ben Austin of IA, Guy C, and Zipporah E Lewis.

Margaret H was preceded in death by one sister, Jessie Jane (Newell) Bell of Eddyville Wapello IA; four grandparents, Samuel Newell of IA, Lydia (Hunt) Coles of Chariton, Lucas Co, IA, Robert Coles of Chariton, Lucas Co, IA, and Nancy (Alexander) of Logan Co OH.

Margaret H died at the age of 54, on Thursday, 2 February 1905.

Ellen Jones


Ellen Jones, my great grandmother, was born in September, 1846, at County Donegal, Ireland. She emigrated from Ireland to Chicago IL.

She married William Cottay at Holy Family Church in Chicago, IL on August 18, 1872.  Witnesses were Patrick Melony (sp?) and Ellen Hopkins.



Ellen and William had four sons and three daughters  between 1873 and 1888.
One of her sons was my grandfather, George Cottay.

She died on January 29, 1903, in Chicago at the age of 56.[1]
Cause of death was “pneumonia”.
